The Greater Albuquerque Housing Partnership and the Deaf Culture Center of New Mexico along with its building partners celebrated the opening of PAH! Hiland Plaza on October 18, 2023.
The four story, 92-unit apartment community will provide affordable housing for individuals and families earning between 30% and 80% of area median income with a leasing preference for residents who are Deaf, DeafBlind, or Hard of Hearing. It is located at Central and Jackson along the Albuquerque Rapid Transit line.
GAHP has partnered with the Deaf Culture Center of New Mexico, the NM Mortgage Finance Authority for tax credits, the City of Albuquerque for HOME funds, and the Albuquerque Housing Authority for 23 project-based rental assistance vouchers. It will be the only apartment community in Albuquerque, and one of only 5 in the nation, with features specifically designed for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing residents.
The Deaf Culture Center will have offices and event space on the ground floor. PAH! will also provide on-site services including youth character building, health and nutrition education, health screening, technology training, screening and application assistance for Medicaid/Medicare, a food pantry, and social events.
Speakers included project partners, Lisa McNiven of the Deaf Culture Center of New Mexico, Carol Pierce, City of Albuquerque director of health, housing & homelessness, and Izzy Hernandez, executive director of the NM Mortgage Finance Authority. Additional speakers and guests included Shad James from Jaynes Corporation, Dan Wendle of Raymond James, Ketan Bharatiya of Hartman + Majewski Design Group, and Julie Nelson, PAH! Hiland Plaza resident.
